The 3 golden rules of the presentation

Rule 1: Canvas first, details later

Start with the synthesis (the one-page canvas) before diving into details. The executive committee wants the big picture, not the 150 pages of analysis. Keep the appendices for the questions.

Rule 2: Financial impact first

The first slide after the canvas must be the financial impact: expected savings, required investment, ROI, timeline. That is what the executive committee wants to know first. Market and risk considerations come next to justify the strategy.

Rule 3: Anticipate the 3 inevitable questions

🏢 Example opening slide

Title: Packaging Category Strategy (3-year horizon)

  • Current spend: EUR 5.2M / 45 suppliers
  • Savings target: EUR 780K (15%) over 3 years
  • Investment: EUR 35K (e-sourcing tool) + 0.5 FTE for 6 months
  • ROI: 22x over 3 years
  • Risk of inaction: 8-12% price increase due to market consolidation
⚠️ Warning: The 3 fatal mistakes in an executive presentation: (1) starting with technical details instead of the synthesis, (2) not quantifying the financial impact, (3) having no clear answer to the resources question. Any one of these mistakes can sink an otherwise excellent strategy.
💡 Key takeaway: Building the canvas takes 2-3 weeks from start (input preparation) to the executive presentation. The 3 golden rules (canvas first, financial impact first, anticipate the 3 inevitable questions) are the key to a successful presentation. The canvas is only worth something if it is approved and executed.
