Canvas construction process and presentation
Objective: Master the 6-step process to build the canvas and the 3 golden rules to present it effectively to management.
6-step construction process
| Step | Duration | Activity | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Prepare the inputs | 2-3 days | Gather the outputs of the 5 tools: Spend Analysis, Porter, Kraljic, Segmentation, Cost Breakdown | Complete data pack |
| 2. Strategy workshop | 1-2 days | Workshop with the key stakeholders to define the vision, objectives and initiatives | Validated strategic directions |
| 3. Draft the canvas | 2-3 days | Fill in the 8 sections with data and analyses. Quantify every initiative. | Canvas draft (8-12 slides) |
| 4. Stakeholder validation | 1 week | Have it reviewed by the business owners, finance and your manager. Incorporate feedback. | Validated canvas |
| 5. Executive presentation | 1 hour | Present to the executive committee for approval and resource allocation | Approved strategy |
| 6. Execution and follow-up | Ongoing | Implement the roadmap and track the KPIs. Quarterly review. | Measurable results |
The 3 golden rules of the presentation
Rule 1: Canvas first, details later
Start with the synthesis (the one-page canvas) before diving into details. The executive committee wants the big picture, not the 150 pages of analysis. Keep the appendices for the questions.
Rule 2: Financial impact first
The first slide after the canvas must be the financial impact: expected savings, required investment, ROI, timeline. That is what the executive committee wants to know first. Market and risk considerations come next to justify the strategy.
Rule 3: Anticipate the 3 inevitable questions
- How much will it bring in? Have a clear savings or value-creation figure, with the calculation method
- What are the risks if we do nothing? Quantify the cost of inaction (price increases, disruptions, loss of competitiveness)
- What resources do you need? Budget, tools, buyer time, management support on sensitive topics
🏢 Example opening slide

- Current spend: EUR 5.2M / 45 suppliers
- Savings target: EUR 780K (15%) over 3 years
- Investment: EUR 35K (e-sourcing tool) + 0.5 FTE for 6 months
- ROI: 22x over 3 years
- Risk of inaction: 8-12% price increase due to market consolidation
